Dorn Method

(60 to 90 mins first appt £45, follow-up sessions 45 mins £35)

Dorn is a very gentle and safe manual therapy which was developed to focus on the causes of common Back and Joint pain. It is a Complementary Therapy to Orthodox medicine, employing techniques which have been designed to correct misalignments of the spine and other joints using a dynamic approach with full active participation of the client.

The Dorn Method avoids unnecessary stress to muscles and ligaments and involves no jerky manipulation, no thrust moves or ‘clicking’ and ‘crunching’ of joints which some people fear or dislike.

It is also a self-help system, where therapists promote good posture and teach a set of simple self-help exercises for clients to practice at home, the aim being to help maintain long term health.

One of the key and unique aspects of The Dorn Method is the approach used to getting joints to move more readily back into their correct natural positions and then stay there. There is no magic about The Dorn Method, it is really all based on physics, fact and common sense, and a little help from the client who rather than being a passive subject, actively works to assist the Dorn Therapist.

The correction of a misaligned joint can sometimes prove quite difficult, and a forceful manual correction might cause more damage than good. A twisted or badly seated spinal column may have vertebrae which are displaced, being held out of place by muscles, and any attempt to move the joints back into their correct positions will usually end up a fight against these muscles. However rather than forcefully trying to move the vertebrae back into place, simple Dorn techniques are employed which ‘distract’ these muscles whilst corrections are made.

The beauty of this technique is that the Therapist is actually working with the client’s body, and this form of dynamic correction is therefore usually readily accepted by our bodies. This form of treatment is also completely safe because it requires only light pressure from the Therapist, involving no thrust moves.

Furthermore, Dorn Method therapy does not unnecessarily stress muscles and ligaments through jerky manipulation that could overextend those muscles, and also allows the spine and joints to be adjusted much more frequently.

During or after therapy, clients are also shown a set of simple self help exercise techniques which they can take away with them to practice regularly at home. These exercises are meant to simulate the corrections made by the Therapist and to help maintain balance in the body hopefully preventing re-occurrence of any problems.

Your Dorn Method Therapist will work together with you at all times beginning with a leg length comparison check; a high percentage of people suffering from back pain show a leg length difference often due to poor leg seating in the hip joint. Your Therapist will then make simple, safe corrections as necessary.

This short video illustrates what might happen during a typical Dorn session:

The Dorn Method offers long term benefits

The Dorn Method is a combination of three parts, which together provide an excellent maintenance and preventative joint care system designed to look after your body over the long term.

As well as the actual treatment, which focuses on looking for and correcting imbalances within the body, Dorn also promotes the use of better posture in day to day life. For example, simple suggestions include not sitting crossed legged or not slouching whilst seated in front of the computer at work; these are typical bad habits we fall into, and which over time can lead to health problems.

The Dorn Method is now available in Tonbridge at Ananda Clinic.  See the Location and Pricing tab for more details.

Back pain: A new DORN

Back pain affects one in five of us and is the UK’s most common work-related disability. Could the Dorn method be the answer? Louise Pyne investigates

Slouching, stress and muscle imbalances are some of the most common triggers of backache. Ranking second only to the common cold as a reason for GP visits and sick days, the NHS estimates that one in five of us see our doctor each year for back-related issues. It’s a condition that affects everyone, from those with physically demanding occupations to office workers who spend hours hunched over a computer screen. The rates of reported cases of back pain in England have doubled over the past 40 years – a trend that has occurred in almost all Western nations. Not surprising, really, when you consider that obesity, depression and stress – all risk factors for back pain – are at an all-time high.

FIGHTING BACK

Until recently, popping a painkiller to seek relief was the norm. But promising research has shown that complementary therapy can be greatly effective in combating chronic back pain. However, while osteopathy and physiotherapy have become popular methods of treating the condition, the Dorn method is still relatively unknown. Developed by Dieter Dorn in Germany around 30 years ago, Dorn therapy works to correct misalignment in the spine and joints. Advanced Dorn therapist Anne Caffrey explains: ‘The objective is to restore balance to the body, by ensuring the pelvis is horizontal and that the vertebrae of the spine and all other joints are brought back to their natural alignment. The client is very much engaged with the treatment, actively moving the arms, legs and head in cooperation with the therapist. This engages the muscles while the therapist gently eases bones and joints back into their natural position, so there’s no need for any painful manipulation or clicking.’

DORN: DECODED

So what happens in a typical Dorn session? Anne takes us through the process: ‘After a consultation the therapist will check and align the whole body, with the therapist applying gentle pressure and the client moving as instructed,’ she says. ‘The first step is a leg-length check, moving to hip, knee and ankle joint corrections. Different parts of the spine are then carefully assessed and realigned, before the shoulders, elbows, wrists, finger joints, collarbone and jaw are then worked on in a similar manner.’ The treatment usually ends with a Breuss massage, (a gentle technique devised by Austrian Rudolf Breuss) to safely stretch and nourish the spine. ‘The therapist works with the client to ease the vertebrae back into their natural position, with no need for any painful clicking’

THE BENEFITS

Your posture will be improved and any aches and pains will generally be eased as a result of Dorn therapy. After the treatment you’ll have an increased awareness of alignment, so the body can counteract the development of a rounded upper back and shoulders, forward head position and neck hump. It’s common to see results after just one session, though up to three sessions is recommended. You are also shown some simple self-help exercises to try at home, which help prolong the benefits. After 14 years of back pain, event planner Klaudie Sheibinger, 30, finally found relief with Dorn: ‘The method is different from any other massage I’ve had in the past – and I’ve tried plenty, without any long-term relief,’ she says. ‘Dorn is really helpful in treating my condition, it delivers great results. The treatment and home exercises are helping me feel stronger and more balanced, and they’ve given me the ability to relieve my pain myself at home. It’s an added bonus that the treatment is finished off with a wonderful Breuss massage, which is very gentle and relaxing.’

Dorn Method is available with Natalie at The Ananda Clinic.  Please see Location and Pricing for further details.
