Massage Therapy in Pregnancy

Massage therapy, in most cases, is safe for both the mother and baby to receive at any stage of pregnancy.   As with all clients, a thorough case history is taken and monitored throughout the course of the treatment.

Massage during pregnancy can help relieve symptoms during each trimester including nausea, headaches, back and neck ache, tension, high blood pressure, oedema (swelling) and general aches and tiredness.  Additionally, guidance on posture and gentle exercise are available and birth partners are invited to join in the later stages to learn techniques that may help the mother during labour and delivery.

During early stages of pregnancy the treatment can take place on the massage couch as usual.  As the pregnancy progresses many women have found it extremely comfortable to have their treatment sitting on a special massage chair which offers full support to the body and bump and allows full access for back, neck, shoulder, head and arm massage.  For those wanting full body massage as far into the pregnancy as possible, a floor futon may be used to allow maximum comfort and space for the treatment to take place.
